Collection Spotlight: Spring Has Sprung!

Spring is in full bloom all around us, including in MAACM’s galleries.

On display in the Tile Gallery is a large portrait of a blissful woman, enveloped in lilies, smelling their fragrant perfume. Made by Albert Robert Valentien, a decorator for Rookwood Pottery Company, this image definitely reminds us to stop and smell the flowers this time of year.

Another work expressing the joy of Spring is a woodblock print by the Gearhart sisters, located in the Children’s Gallery. Depicting a happy young girl dancing among larger than life purple blooms, the print was part of a never-published book, Let’s Play. A poetic verse accompanied it:

I’d rather dance alone out doors,
With Canterbury bells in rows,
Than waltz on slippery polished floors
With boys who step upon my toes.

Make sure you take the time to admire the beauty that only Spring can bring.
