Collection Spotlight: Then the Epicure by Jessie Wilcox Smith

Displayed in the Children’s Gallery, on the 5th floor, are a collection of illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935). Throughout her 40-year career Smith completed over 450 works for various publications in books and magazines. As a prolific illustrator, Smith is well-known for her depictions of children and domestic scenes like this picture, Then the Epicure (The Third Age), of a young girl sharing a meal with her doll and teddy bear. Displayed along with its illustration in the original publication The Seven Ages of Childhood, this darling image focuses on sharing a meal with good company.

This week, as we celebrate and sit down to an enjoyable meal we give thanks to all of MAACM’s members, supporters, friends, volunteers and staff. So, like Smith’s “young girl eating porridge,” let’s stuff our faces with some delicious food, surrounded by loved ones.
